Time Trialing at SoPYC.
One Saturday in September
With the need to get some power photos on board for the corporate brochure being organized for SoPYC, I chose a sunny day with minimum breeze to have a look at what was going on.
Very kindly Garry Morrison arranged a ride with Greg and Val Power ( self admitted rookies ) and we took off onto the water to enjoy the day. Greg and Val have a lovely little launch named Perseverance with all the trimmings and they were more than happy to allow me to shoot off the back so long as I was quiet while they got about the job of getting around the track. Also on board was a young lass Jenny, daughter to a friend of Greg whose role was to keep track of the times and how close to the mark they were on each rounding.
We took off after Thanet and the pleasure of time trialing came back as the spring sun warmed my winter chilled bones. Wonderful! Far better than last week Greg commented ...... the rain was pouring in every where. Oh well, we had a wet day out on the water on Wednesday too.
A cause for concern was the flotilla of dinghies that had set off around our start time and were making their way across the river to Royal Perth accompanied by a swarm of support boats. My god.. right through the middle of them with the early power skippers having to move a little to avoid bowling the dinghies over. Hope that that was sorted out. We found our way up to the highest mark on the river at Quarry where a couple of speccy turns at the mark were noted and the Kennys on Balancing Act managed to put on a show that they probably hadn't intended to. See the pictures for the sequence.
Then on down river with Deepwater as a mark and Lucky Bay as the main turning point to come back up the river . Several good follow shots there too. However as all things go it was over too soon and we quietly slipped back into out pen assisted by the boys on Dalusional who Val admitted have adopted them as they slowly fit into the community. By the way Greg has slipped over from the bright side. He was a sailor for quite a while, but Val has convinced him that going to Rotto is much more fun at 20 knots. And a shower and loo are just as important. Fair comment.
Parked up, out came the food and drinks and the trial was discussed amongst the crew of the day. "About 50 points," Greg muttered. "Worse than last week and it was raining then." Jen agreed, but acknowledged that it was off their time keeping, not the "official" results. "Humph" he said... "still Wooden Spoon material". Another glass of bubbles was consumed and the day brightened up regardless as friends and other visitors passed by making comment on their day.
I moved off around 5 pm passing my thanks to Greg and Val as well as Jenny and I wish them well in the future. I hope that they managed to find their way home that night as the evening promised to be a good one.
