The Solo Series September the 14th.
Once again the weather was kind, as the sea breeze came in,
faltered and then returned with a very useful west-sou-westerly that bent into
the south as the day progressed.
Seventy plus boats graced the water with strong showings from the Opti fleets, the 125's and the 420 fleets. The Flying Fifteen fleet has arisen from their winter hibernation and was seen on the water graced by the presence of accomplished match racer Adele Jackson and Dean McAullay, Nick and Janet Jerwood and John Hassen and David Sutcliffe amongst the other competitors in the fleet.
The Moth fleet were preparing for the next worlds event at Sorrento in Victoria 2015 and were seen carving up the river in almost perfect foiling conditions.
The Laser fleets were in fine fettle with Laser full rig sailor and current leader in the Solo regatta Richard Leslie back onto the water to ensure that no one got near him in the last series on the water. The Radials were sailing well and the Rat Pack were constantly snapping at the heels of Fremantle SC coach and twice world champion Tristan Brown while the 4.7's are beginning to feel the presence of former Opti sailor Zac Littlewood and Caelin Winchcombe.
The overall results for the five regattas held during the winter has had some great stories as the series has produced good results for some, showing that consistency pays off.
The full rig Laser Fleets had Richard Leslie sweep all before him with three series wins over the five regattas with eleven firsts throughout all of the series. In the Radials, Conor Nicholas played his ace card and took the radials by one point from Richard Maher with James Stewart two points behind. The 4.7's had Zac Littlewood a clear winner with two series wins over the five regattas and fourteen wins over the whole of the series.
Phil (Bugs) Smith sailed well to beat Scott Sharpe in the Moths, though Scott was still in a learning phase with his new machine and sailed well in the last regatta. What Max needs to do, is to stop looking at the camera, as he is sure to hit someone while he's smiling at the lens.
The 125's had Felix Brown and Alex Thomson at the top of their game sailing against a strong fleet of eleven boats and once again consistency proved to be the winner for them. A little tale to tell about the crew of a 125 called What Eva. A few weeks ago during a frostbite I was out on George Ruuls Cole 32 in hot pursuit of another Cole when the little purple beast slotted itself in between us and then started pushing us up. You have to admire their courage.......
With the migration of some of the 420 sailors into other classes, former Opti sailor, Jayden Dalton and George Boulden took the cake away from Oliver Mavrick and Adam Brenz-Verca racking up three series wins in the five regattas.
In the Flying 15's Jen Sims and Andrew Wallace carried off the series with their consistency being the winner for them over the four regattas sailed by the F 15 fleet.
Rome Featherstone showed great promise in the Optimists with a good result leaving him 8 points ahead of the next Opti sailor and the Pelicans had to go to overall scores with both on eight points to decide the result between Kimberly Lanter/Aiden Duthie and Jack Luketina/Ted Woo with the former taking first.
Many thanks to SoPYC, the organizers and the volunteers who ran the event. A special thanks to PC Les Swinton and his wife Trish who have put in so much effort into this event over the past years. Thanks also to the Sponsors ( Schweppes ) who have looked after the event for the last 5 years or so.
And most of all.. the sailors. Keep it up guys.
