The Inter School Team Racing 2014 at Mandurah
Every so often some one comes along and says " Why not us ? "
For years the South of Perth Yacht Club has had the privilege of hosting the event for Yachting WA and it was more or less a foregone conclusion that SoPYC would do it again. This time Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club put their hands up and said "Why not us."
This meant a bit of hard work from the YWA gang, but Dean Caple of YWA was up to it and he moved heaven and earth as well as 12 pacers down to Mandurah plus all the other stuff to enable the MOFSC club to get the event going. Not that MOFSC had any problems as a great bunch of parents, volunteers and others decided to throw their effort into the event and MOFSC was well served by Mikael, their sailing development man. He was on the water and had things working from the get go.
I was only able to attend one day, the finals, but I had a good selection of images to put up and I noted that Jenny Medd was there so she will have been working the images as well.
Four teams made it to the finals after dropping Scotch A and Christ Church B's in the semi's. These were Aquinas, Hale School, Shenton College and Christ Church A team. Of the other 10 teams competing, I spoke to Eve from Esperance High School whom I knew from previous years as a competitor and she was pleased with their performance coming 7th, just outside the semi's, but admitted that without a coach, the team needed a little more impetus. Good on them for coming up and sailing any way.
On a very light day with a big tidal influence the third day was all about rolling Christ Church A's as everyone was trying, but few even got close. Headed up by Lachy Gilmour, the third of the Gilmour gang to go through Christ Church the A team was on fire and I believe they made it through the event without losing a flight.
The semifinals were held in a patchy breeze that tested the skills of all the sailors. Christ Church took little time in defeating Aquinas two nil and Shenton and Hale went to one a piece, before Shenton took the third race. Despite the late arrival of the sea breeze, Christ Church had no surprises dealing with Shenton to take the finals out and became the first team to go through unbeaten in modern times. The final results were Christ Church Grammar A's first, Shenton College second and Hale School third.
