The 2018 Rumble in the Reach
at the East Fremantle Yacht Club
Once again the seabreeze made it's presence felt in the Reach.
Not as it has on other occasions, this was more a purr than a rumble, but the sports boats didn't care. 20 boats hit the water with the Vipers leading the way, followed closely by the SB20's from Freo. Three Thompsons of varying lengths shared the water with a pair of Melges 24's and an assortment of other slick skiffs.
A breeze of 12 to 15 knots meant that it was tactical decisions, not just raw power as the "Duck" soon found out. No matter where she was, she could be seen sliding into a corner on one ear and the crew were roaring with laughter as they did so. However, the racing was pretty hot amongst the Vipers and the SB20's had the same urge with the inevitable results. Someone would end up on their side at the bottom of the course and it occasionally blocked access to others going past, with wild swerves as a consequence.
I'd like to welcome a young lady Emily Jones who occasionally pilots an S80 at SoPYC. She was invited to take the helm of an SB20 and it was grand to see her out on the water. Bruce Wilkinson and company on Turkish Delight a Farr 25 that doesn't say no. To John Park, who managed to get his face up on the podium a couple of times and I'll be happy to send him an image if needs one. To Geoff Oliver with Excitabull, a BULL 7000 who came up for the Cockburn Sound Regatta and decided to stay for the Rumble. All that and a big spinnaker for the day. It looks like young Sam Gilmour might be looking at joining the Viper fleets in the upcoming Worlds. I already know of the father and son thing happening with the Jerwoods, though not necessarily on the same boat.
I can't argue with Peter Kennington's choice for the wipe out of the day, Declan Keogh ( SB 20 ) probably deserved it. But I can offer Mitch de Vrie's attempt in front of a moored up launch slightly above us in the first race. Spectacular ! And if he'd hit the launch !??!
There really should be a fine for the main sheet hand on Zippier. I had to Photoshop the Z onto his shirt as his crew shirt was clearly still in the wash and he'd grabbed whatever he could find. I've included both images.
Many thanks to East Fremantle Yacht club and Simon Walker for the invitation to photograph the day and to Flags Danny and Mike who ensured that I was looked after. To the media boys Ed, Tony, Peter, Jonny et all. Thanks for the day, we could hear you out on the water. To Rod Beurteaux who is the naming sponsor of the event ( and not for the first time) and he makes sure he does well in the results. :-) To my drivers on the water all, many thanks and to all the EFYC volunteers who make the regatta possible, my thanks to you too.
And of course the sailors all.
